nitrate remover

can anyone tell me why everyone doesnt use this product a chemical nitrate remover (chips) goes in bag and put it in a powerhead or filter? it removes harmful nitrates? seems like a wise choice? is there a downside to using this product. does it work?

I have used a product similar and it did very little. Well, it lightened my wallet. It was supposed to remove the trates as well as silicates. I just assume beef up my refugium. Cost less than half of what I payed for the stuff and it will be around a lot longer.
