if you have fo, most fish will not have a big problem with your nitrates at that level, and will survive fine, but with inverts, it can be grey area, as you probably know corals and anemones can have big problems with nitrates at that level

Bots44,
My anomone and feather dusters died when my nitrates rose above 40ppm. I have since replaced my Crushed Coral subsrtate with a Deep Sand Bed and my nitrates have steadily fallen. The measurement is now at 30ppm. I am planning on adding a refugium tank and grwoing algae in it to bring down the nitrates, ammonia, and also to feed the fish with.
Watch out for ich.
nitrates is actually another form of nitrogen in the water that takes up oxygen. most fish can live in this don't chance it with inverts. iv'e heard of fish tanks that were up over 150 and the fish were fine. 1 way to tell if it is affecting a fish is they will breathe very heavy. but like i said most fish can live fine.also what kind of substrate and filtration do you have that could affect it
