Nitrates/Nitites

You have to figure out what's causing this. Are you overfeeding your tank? That's the most common reason. Is your tank overstocked (more than 1" of fish per 4 gallons)? Have you lost any fish lately? How old is your tank?
Welcome to SWF.com, BTW!!!!

The system is 8 weeks old, now currently has 4 fish...2 Clown, 1 purple tang, 1 blue tang all fish are small. Feeding is very limited...using the Ocean Nutrition brand formula 2. 1/2 of a cube per day. Did lose an Angel fish and a cleaner shrimp that were added last week. Survived only 2 days. 40 gallon aquarium.

2 tangs in a 40 is not good! Even 1 is to many, yikes :scared: You need to do a good water change to get them down Take the tangs back to the lfs. What filtration do you have? Substate? Do you run powerheads, and skimmer? We need to knowthese things to help you

i agree with puffer there! But that's not the reason for your high nitrates/nitrites. You should definately do a 20% water change. Were the nitrites/ates high before you lost the angel and cleaner? If not, it may be a direct result of the death of those two.

Thanks for the advice....will do the water change tonight. Any reccomendations on fish and inverts for a tank this size? Or should I go to a bigger tank and save the hassle of switching later?

if your tank is indeed still cycling, performing a water change will only slow down the process.
that's if it's still cycling.
do you use r/o water? have you checked the parameters for the water source

Well, you said your tangs are small, so they're ok for now, but they'll definately need a bigger tank in the near future. If you have the $$$ now, i'd say go for it, and get a larger tank... Mind you, if you don't want to have to upgrade again in the future, you should at least go with a 90 gallon or bigger, 125 being ideal!
If you're not attached to the tangs yet, see if you can trade them in at your LFS.
On a tank that size, i'd say a few cleaner shrimp (they like to be in groups). A few firefish (they like to be in groups too). Some sort of goby, i always recomend the Yellow Watchman Goby, or maybe some type of jawfish (these don't like to be in groups). These are all really hardy and easy to care for, and loads of fun to watch! I'd definately have a few firefish if my tank weren't already fully stocked...

you know, this is a grea excuse to get another tank... "the fish aren't supposed to be in that size tank, THEY need a bigger one!" lol. You could become a fanatic. Have a tank in every room... i'm still working on that! lol

why do you continue to give bad advice to everyone??? 40 is NOT fine for two tangs, especially a blue and purple... shame on you, i feel bad for anyone who listens to your horrible "expertise"

or if he can afford it, get a bigger tank! and you didn't say anything about returning the fish...
You'll also need a LOT of LR for that tank too, just to let you know!
