I have been trying forever to get my nitrates down, they run around 40 or so. I have tried what I think is everything. My tank is 55 galllons and I have a 3 inch live sandbed, 20 pounds of live rock, 3 black and white striped damsels, 2 percula clowns, 1 lawnmower blenny and 3 blue finned damsels. Any suggestions???

BurNspy is correct.
If I understand right there is only 2 ways of reducing nitrates.
#1 DSB.
#2 water changes.
I have a 4" DSB but I also use a "slow nitrate filter". not sure if it does any good or not but it is built into my tank so i use it. ;)

Gailen,
Water changes if the original water does not contain nitrates is your first option. But other thing can help in the long run, including a properly setup DSB as mentioned above.
Do you have protien skimmer? How often and how much do you feed you fish (over-feeding)? How often do you do water changes and how much? Does your salt contain nitrates? Have you tried adding some caulerpa or other macroalgae to reduce nitrates?
