Not that it is real high but my test kit readsmy nitrates at 5-10, but I have four coral that are doing very well and I have coraline algae all over my glas, and several rock. Would all of that be going on if the nitrates were bad?

"5-10" is really not that bad, but I would not let it go any higher. How big is you tank and how often do you do water changes?

It is 55 gal,I was changing about 12 gal each week but now do it every two weeks, noticed that it does not change the nitrates going a little longer. I was doing it evwery week trying to lower it to zero, but never could get it there.

What type of filtration do you have? Do you have a sump, refugium, canister?
How long has the tank been running?

Do not try to get the Nitrates to zero. For some people its pretty much impossible, besides unless u have SPS that require perfect water, 5-20 nitrates is not bad, but do not go over the 20, never. IMO lots of people don't want to admit the truth when they say that their nitrates are at 0, or they just starve their poor fish to death. I have a large refugium, completly over grown with chaeto and still, could not get it lower than 10. Feed my fish one cube of mysis a day, its gone in 10 seconds, and without water changes I am at 20.My corals are growing, inverts are very active, fish are insanely active, so I would not stress, or you will develop an obsession. Besides lots of softies like 'dirty water'. Keep an eye on the phosphates when it comes to algea, and corals don't like it either. Make sure you have enough circulation.

People, people...anything under 40 is safe. Anything under 20 is pretty dang good. Mine stays between 10 and 20 and I had a tank full of healthy coral. My Nitrates have gone to 40, no ill effects but that was too close or my liking so I did a water change ASAP.
