10 won’t hurt fish not even most coral. If the system is allowing nitrates to increase they will probably continue to rise. The system is out of balance meaning the biological filtration can’t keep up with the waste.
Mine are often above 50, I shoot for 25 or less.

A single water change won’t make a significant impact unless it’s large. 5 gallons from a 10 gallon will reduce it from 10 to 5 but the same amount from a 50 gal will only reduce them to 9 which wou won’t be able to see in the test.

A couple questions.
How big is your tank?
How many fish?
What kind of fish?

Suggestions to help
1. Reduce the amount you feed, but don’t under feed.
2. Larger, more frequent water changes
3. Macro algae
