How much live rock you got and how long has the tank been up and running? Whats in it and how often do you feed? Your bio filter should be turning your nitrites in to nitrates, so I am guessing this is a new setup? If it is let it run its course and then be consistant with your water changes. The best way to get your nirates down is water changes. Keep up with them and dont over feed and you should be fine. If you have a little refugium you could throw in some cheato too.

I agree if this is a new set up, you may still be cycling. If this set up is established and has live stock in it, there are other issues to consider. But more info on your tank is needed.
But I am more confused as to what is high... Nitrites or Nitrates.

I have had the problems with nitrates hovering around 20, not horrible but a tad high. I do 20% water changes every weekend and feed every other day.
While upgrading my hood last month I got a good look down into the back chambers and they were filled with gunk. Now I make sure to clean them out which I hadn't been doing for the last year. During a water change I turn off the pump, let the water become still and then take a turkey baster and spray inside chambers 1 and 3 to get the detritus to float in the water. Then I siphon out that water with all the gunk in it.
Another thing I have done in the last month is put a small turbo snail in chamber 1 and 3 to help keep the detritus to a minimum. I really can't take full credit for this idea, the credit goes to my turbo named Jose. He kept going into #3 on his own after I repeatedly removed him in January. When I noticed in February the amount of gunk, I thought I would keep him in there if he likes so much and I added another one to chamber #1.
The next chamber in question is #2...are you running bioballs, LR rubble, or a fuge? I believe LR can be just as bad as bioballs for a nitrate factory if you let detritus settle back there too. About once a month I take out the LR rubble, sipon out the chamber as mentioned above and rinse one third of the rubble in old tank water. You can do this same procedure with bio balls, BUT you don't want to rinse all the balls or rocks at the same time as this can disrupt your natural filtration balance.
Another approach you can use (which I do too) is run phosban or chemi-pure elite. This can help keep trates and phosphates to a minimum.

To be honest I haven't run that yet. My phosban is due to be replaced early April and I plan to use Chemipure Elite for the first time. On another forum this product is used a lot in their Nano section with great results.
I think there is a way to clean Chemipure Elite to extend its life cycle, but I probably will dispose of it and use more after the initial 3 or 4 month life cycle...if it works as advertised.

I've been using it for the past 2 mths in my 55 gal reef tank.So far it's better than carbon I think.
