Nitrites PH Nitrates

I am fairly new to the hobby and hopefully someone can help me.
I have a 55 gallon w/ 90 lbs LR. I was using a Ehiem canister filter and my water changes were being done with tap water until I found out about the RO/DI system which i just ordered. 1 week ago i purchased a ecosytstem filter, since then my nitrites went up
my nitrates went up and ph dropped. the tank has been established now for 8 months with minimal problems and suprisingly the water quality was good even w/ the tapwater up until i added the new filter. Anyone w/ info would be greatly appreciated. It is driving me nuts. Thanks.
Nitates 20 was 5
Nitrites 0.4 was just under 0.1
PH 8.0 was 8.3

I had the reverse problem with my 55g. After a couple of months of using both a tetratech and a canister filter, I noticed the ph had gone down to about 7.4-7.8. When I add ph upto correct the ph to 8.2, nitrites went up. Since then I have removed the canister filter because it was no longer needed. With more time the nitrites now remain zero with ph still a little shakey. I have added baking soda when the ph falls. That appears to be about every two weeks or so. I think what has happened is basically the tank has further cycled. From what I understand, filters and bioload all tend to lower PH.
I will be interested to see what other responses result.

I am also interested in the response, that is if any one does respond. I beleive the eco filter needs time to do its job. So maybe i am just jumping the gun. I have learned how sensitive the enviroment can be. I guess that is what being a newbie is all about. Its just a matter of learning the hard way.
