Nitrites too high

My 100 gal tank I think is either on the downside of the cycle if it hasn't cycled already. My readings are ammo-0 trates-5 ppm ph-8.2 But the big thing is that my nitrites are really high. How could I get these to reduce this it cycle and I am in need of my first water change? any input would be appreciated thanks in advance.

your nitrites should go down on their own. right now you are building up the necessary bacteria to turn nitrites into nitrates. you are probably on the downside of the peak of nitrites. i would give it some tiem, and wouldnt change any water, that will just get rid of some bacteria.

I have the same problem as you... My tank has been up for about two months, I think? Its a 72-gal btw... The Nitrites are REALLY high and have been for awhile too... I asked my LFS besides everyone here... They said to do a small water change (LFS), because the bacteria (Nitrosome or whatever) will keep building up if I dont... I did one (20%),two weeks ago... And one yesterday, also (20%)... They said that should help and I will be on my way... I will keep you guys posted tho, to see if that were a good or bad idea... And if anyone else has a clue let us know... This is getting frustrating!

i honestly wouldnt do a water change. if you have food in left in the bottom of your tank that can make your nitrites stay high. so id vaccum out your tank, and let it go. id also add a product called stress zyme. it helped my cycle. but thats just me.

I feel you should never change any water while its in the cycle, this will only prolong the cycle, you should not have anything in the tank to worry about the high nitrates , other than what you are cycling with!!!! Our next setup will be cycled with raw shrimp , no live fish, just my 2 cents, good luck
