Nitrites

Since cleaning our CC bed in 180 FOwLR I have been getting nitrite readings of 0.25-1.0 off & on. Been doing partial water changes. I believe it's from the ffod that stays on the bottom that the 3 large hermit crabs don't get at. I have aggressive fish that are real pigs: niger, humu, lion, porkypuffer, naso. Would switching to deep sand bed help? I've started running a fluidized bed filter to help. Also added Nitrex to canister filter. Tank has been running for a year.

No problems except for Picasso taking the smallest one (2") for a ride & dropping him. Puffer checks them out but they "swing" at him & he flutters away. They're 3-4" so no one messes with them (for now!)
