Nitrites

Hello everyone. My nitrites lately have been sky high. I went to my aquaruim expert and he told me to do the usual water change so I did last night at about 7:30. I woke up this morning, tested my levels and my nitrites are still sky high. My nitrates are 0 and my amonia is 0 my ph is 8.4. SO...I'm just wondering if I should AGAIN do another water change. Any ideas? Please someone tell me what they recommend. thanks. :help:

morning, i have done a lot of reading on nitrites today. i have a 35 gallon tank, whisper off the back, powerhead on the side, everything is good but the nitrites. LFS said just leave it for 2 weeks. (this is a 4 week old tank) now i guess i have way to little LR from reading. (about 3 lbs) i still have one damsel left in the tank (started with 4), so should i wait? or start dumping LR and do a WC this weekend?

I would start getting the LR in the tank that's what is going to provide the majority of the bio filtration for your tank. its usually recommended to have 1 to 2 pounds of rock per gallon. of course in a 35g 70lbs may be a bit overwhelming. so shoot for over a pound per gallon and if you think you can put more in without making your tank look overcrowded go for it. you cant really have too much rock unless its eliminating all the swim space for your fish.

then the LFS is idiots, the bacteria on the LR is going to eat the nitrites and break them down to nitrate.

Could this tank still be in the middle phase (Nitrite growth) of a cycle? Even though ammonia and nitrates are reading 0, has the ammonia already risen and fallen? I suspect so since you've lost three fish, probably due to high ammonia. Maybe, you're not yet at the point of having nitrites fall and nitrates grow.
