well my mastiff is back to the vet for at least 3 days.he had a relapse.he lost a pound already so he went from 8 to 7.soi need to hang in there once again.since the first vet didnt seem to take care of him and sent him home in two days we called a few others untill we got one we were more confident in.they said a dog with parvo should never only have treatment for a couple days usually it is 3-5.
so i hope the little guy can fight another round.

I was gonna say something but I didnt want to sound like I didnt know what i was talking about. My girl is a vet tech at a very known place. They had a handful of dogs place in the AKC show a few months back. She said Parvo puppys need round the clock type care for at least a week before safe assement can be made about recovery.

it is one of these learn as you pay type of things i guess.kinda like saltfish .this vet seems to think 5 days.what i have learned is parvo last only a short time 3 days.basicly if the dog can make it 4-5 days after onset he should be ok.yea he is getting an i.v. of fluids 24 hrs a day which i guess just flushes the parasite through the system.
crypt if you have anything to say i have no problem taking in all the info i can get.thanks.

We took our dogs to a vet on golden triangle road between 35 and keller. We never had any problems with him. At least he used to be there 10 years ago. (dang has it been that long?) He was more of a rural vet, and we felt like we could trust his word on things.

Alot would depend on the breed of puppy, the age, how quickly it was caught, and just the overall hardiness of that particular puppy. I have seen older puppies that were caught early be released after two or three days. I have seen small breed puppies be held for two to three weeks just to support their more fragile systems.
Sometimes, vets will do the best they can to "push" puppies through treatment, relying on intensive care at home to cut down on costs when that is a concern. Sometimes it works out, sometimes, a fragile system doesn't continue to improve and backslides. Hard to predict.
I caught the back end of this so sorry if these questions have been answered. Why didn't the breeder vacccinate this guy? He was young but being a large breed puppy and knowing that being weaned he had no resistance to viruses he should have NEVER been in a situation around a large number of dogs and puppies. He really should have been vaccinated prior to being introduced to that environment.......period.
I would stongly suggest that you contact your breeder. I am not sure of the specific terms of your purchase but the breeder should be assisting on these costs. In many states, it is illegal for her/him to sell or transfer with intent to sell an unvaccintated puppy. In many states, it is illegal to sell any puppy under the age of 8 weeks.
I hate to come off hardassed but the life and death fight this puppy is living right now could have been totally avoided had the breeder been responsible and not tried to skip costs. Did you get a health certificate?
I bred bullmastiffs for many years. They are often weaned younger than alot of breeds because of the large litters and boisterous behavior of the pups being hard on the mother. With that being said, the main reason that puppies are kept with their litter until after 8 weeks isn't the weaning part but more of the matter of identity and maturity. Pups taken from the litter before 8 weeks tend to have more anxiety and behavioural issues it is speculated. Alot of people want their pups before 8 weeks thinking they have a better bonding time and I really don't feel that's the case. I think the pups can become too dependant and needy and have a hard time with seperation. Just my two cents.
If you want any help with the statues and all that fun stuff let me know.

here in texas there is no 8 week selling timeline.i believe most states do have it though.the breeder has in the contract to see a vet in 48 hrs.since it was a saturday when we got him that was out.i know the i.v. is fluids.but it just doesnt rehydrate him it also helps push the parasite through his system.he is also on dewormer, antibiotics and a bunch of other stuff.
the vet called me earlier and said nitro still dont have much of an appetite but he is not throwing up or diarrhea today.so i guess thats good so far.he is staying there until at least tuesday.seems to be a warrior

I need to mention something that you should run by the vet:
The parvo virus may be in you lawn, or possible even in your house.
If it's in your house, that's easy to get rid of, but your lawn is a whole different ball game, worth talking with the vet about so that this doesn't keep happening.
Good luck to you and Nitro!
