No chiller/heater dilema

Im curious, what do people do that dont have a heater or a chiller on their tank when temperatures rapidly change?

I have 300 watts of MH on a 20 gallon and don't use a chiller. A simple fan works fine for me.
Heaters, on the other hand, don't cost nearly as much as a chiller so it shouldn't be a problem to get one.

like a portable fan used to cool the room...maybe i wasnt clear with my question or misunderstood...i mean temperture drops over the night...ie...80 during the day...then overnight, waking up the tank is at 74.

well im not sayin thats what happens to me..im just curious, because i dont really want to invest in a chiller. and not sure if i want a heater...i mean...are they automatic, if the temp gets too low, it will turn on and heat...just curious...im sure there are people without a chiller and heater and get these drops

Heaters will turn on automatically when the temperature drops down to a certain point, and turn off automatically once it reaches a certain temp.
Anybody who gets drops that big and that low on a regular basis probably doesn't have any luck with corals and inverts.

I'm in the SF Bay Area, so it's not as hot up here.
Is a lot of the heat in your tank from your lights? If so, you could run the lights at night when it's cooler instead of during the day. It won't be as good to look at when you're awake, but at least it keeps the tank cool.
You could also add a fan to blow across the water to increase evaporation. The fan on my tank lowered the temp. by about 4 degrees.

I'm near Sacramento. I don't have a chiller and currently do not have my heater hooked up either. What I've done is paid attention to how my tank temperature fllucuates. I know that during the day I have to keep the AC on in my house and keep the fan (a regular oscillating house fan) running next to the top of the tank (I've removed the glass cover of the tank). At night though I have to turn off the fan or my temperature drops 2-3 degrees.
I will put my heater in the sump in the next 4 weeks or so when the temperature starts to truly drop.
I should have purchased a chiller though (my pg&e went from 70 to 270) in July and August. Next year I will invest in a chiller.
Love,
A

Well I think im going to get a heater for this winter...because i am more worried about the water droping, then rising. Then by next winter i will see what happen..i already had put 2 computer cooling fans on the hood, so well see. THanks guys
