no substrate

so what's the latest substrate? live sand seems to be the way everyone is going but i have read some stuff about not using any substrate at all. when i was doing it before i used crushed coral but some posters do not think it is a good choice. i was going to use live sand to dress the bottom of the tank up and help a little with filtration. how deep should it be? i was thinking about an inch. several years ago i was in a local shop that had a tank half filled with sand and that was its only filtration. was interesting but half a tank of sand does not look to great for veiwing. can live rock and and live sand be used soley for filtration in a FOT or one with some inverts as well? how about one with corals? i have some cathing up to do!
thx!

Many people have successful bare bottom tanks. Yes, if you have the right amount of LR and LS you'd have perfectly good natural filtration ... I'd recommend getting a good skimmer though.

so if you go with LS and LR how much of each do you need to be acceptable for fish, inverts, an corals? might as well plan for the who deal as i am sure i will want to add more stuff eventually.

so the home depot play sand is ok for the tank? if so that would be great. i could then add a small bag of the live to get teh rest going correct? i mean "live" sand is just sand that has been colonized correct? noting fancy on it like super bacteria or something?

You can also get sand at Wal-mart. i just got some today. It's a wal-mart brand called garden basic play sand. I got four big bags for 10 bucks! watch the HD sand some of it has silica. Oh and if you have LR you do not need live sand. The rock will make the sand live in no time.

Should try to buy agronite sand, some of the play sand contains stuffs like that, calcium based. I read if you take a bottle of white vingar and dump some into the sand and if it fizzles, it contains calcium and that's the sand you want. I think that's how it goes, if I'm wrong, someone please correct me!
