can you cut out a piece of foam or sponge the size of your overflow and place it on top to muzzle the noise? or a piece of plexiglass?

I did the stockman mod. I am so gad they allow links now. WWW.livinglava.com/diy_stockman_mod.htm
A towel over the box helps also.
If you get a slurping sound after you do the mod let me know as I am in the middle of fixing it now. I believe I have found the solution.
Note: there is a link to another site at the end of the link I sent you so read carefully.
I am trying to increase flow in my overflow. I have dremmeled out the fins and the water level is the same inside and outside the box so that isn't it. What did you use for a the syphon tube? I am looking for like maybe a 1 1/4 inch tube.

I used a 1" cpvc mpt and screwed a 1" cpvc female onto the male. (male end of coupling inside box) and sealed them with an o-ring and sealer. I then adapted that to 1 14" tubing from the hardware store. It wasn't flexible so I had to use 90 degree elbows to route to my sump.. So far it is all working good. Except for the overflow noise. I built the whole overflow and sump set-up for under $100 less pump. I will post the deirctions when I have time to sit and put it "to paper"

Having a 1 1/4 down pipe and only a 1 inch overflow may be part of your problem as you have a lot of air in the tube causing noise.
I shudder even mentioning that you may want to put a ball valve on the end of the tube in the sump and restrict the flow a little so that it reduces the air in the tube. All those curves can trap air too. A ball valve on my set-up wouldn't get plugged because of the stockman mod but with out a prefilter of some sort plugging would make me nervious.
I suppose I should of asked what kink of noise you are getting?

I did the mod and my noise has been cut down at least 90%. Thanks for the great info. I may downsize the sump feed line in the future. Right now everything is working and I couldn't be happier!!!!!!!!!!!! And when the power goes off I only drain back about 2 gallons!!!

On more thing. I had to drill a buch of holes below the large pipe to get mine quiet. I stil get the flushing noise accasionally so I am going to open up some of the holes. Have probably about 10 and are spaced all over the tube.
I am gonna inlarge some of the holes to 1/4 inch.

One question, Do you get an oil slick with this setup? It looks like the 1-1/4 inch piece is below the surface. That wouldn't let the slick to be syphoned out, or does it not matter.
I have a DIY model w/ 1" PVC, my pump is doing about 400gph and my sump is in the basement,it gurgles alot. I'm suprized my wife hasn't complained yet. I think this may do the trick, but I hate the oil slick with no sump.
thanx

I had an oil slick when I first set the tank up because I didn't have enough surface movement in the tank.
I really doubt it will cause a slick since it would have to seperate out in the overflow box but the flow over the partition on the backside of the overflow should keep everything well mixed up.
And if not it only costs like 5 bucks so you can't loose.
If it does cause a slick please let me know but I really doubt it. ;)

Ahhhhh.... I see.
I don't have an overflow box because I made my overflow myself. It's just pvc. But I will try it. I have lots of surface movement in the tank now. A little slick is better than alot of NOISE! :p
