non motorized skimmer?

how are these? there is one at ***** for like 40$. my brother who doesnt have a big budget was thinking about getting this. does "you get what you pay for" count for this skimmer? thanks

add another 40 or so and get a good skimmer not worth the wasted money IMO
dont get me wrong its better than nothing but I would save my money and get a good one to start with.

so he should just forget about getting this? his tank is cycling right now and about to be done....i saw one of these skimmers set up on a reef tank and it looked like it was working great. he has a 30g tank.......

Well the Lee counter current skimmers and the Sanders conter courrent skimmers all powered by an air pump do work just fine for the price its hard to beat really. They do work unlike a seaclown. Its important to keep the limestone air diffiusers clean and changed out when necessary, and water levels topped off. I kow whats a 40 bucks tolots of foks here but I remember times I had problems scraping together 10 bucks. So personally I would not be afraid of Lee counter current or Sanders counter current skimmers one bit, as long as I knew fuill well they do require routine cleaing and changing of limewood diffuser you'll be just fine. I stil use Sanders air powered skimmers and do have 2 lee skimmers as well which are used from time to time......YOu failed to mention what brand skimmer it was that youor referenceing, and only those two come to mind.

Counter current skimmers are the least efficient type as far as protein removal per gallons of flow, but they do work. However, IMO, Lee products are junk. The plastic is thin and weak and will break and or leak.
