Not sure about water changes?

:notsure: After our 150g was up for about 7 months, we moved to a new house (with no loss of life and was able to save almost all the water) we was here 1 month when it cracked right across the front spilling water all over the place. Fortunately we had large containers still around from the move and was able to save about half of the water. No one in my area had a 150 in stock and the wait was 3 to 5 days.... Not wanting to lose it all we decided to upgrade to a 180g drilled tank. When we set it up there was enough water and LR to fill the 180 a little more than half. So half the water is fairly new(3 weeks), how often should I do water changes?
My nitrates are up just a little but everything seems just fine. We have about 250 pds of LR ....blue,scarlet and zebra hermits, emerald crabs, a teddybear crab, a few unknown hitchhicker crabs, 4 kinds of snails, some conchs, pepperment shrimp ,coral banded shrimp and some tiny unknown white shrimp living in the LR ,flame scallop ,cleaner clams ,long tentacle anemone ,bumble bee anemone ,a black cucumber ,scooter blennies ,a unknown goby ,damsels and 2 clowns.
It took us a bit to get the water flow right. After paying hundreds of dollars on pumps we found they still was no match for a tank of this size and ended up using a sump pump made for pumping rain out of new fondations (my husbands a masonry contrator) and drilling holes in the 2 bio filters to connect them together. We turned 1 of the other pumps into a super duper powerhead and hooked pvc pipe to it with 6 holes. Without the pipe the flow was way to high and blew sand every where. We are going to add plants somewhere very soon to help aid in keeping down my nitrates. But still not sure how often I should do a water change. Its been up 3 weeks and I'm doing one tonight not sure if I should do 10 or 20 percent. Nitrates are about 25, they was always 15 to 20 before. Nitrites zero (like always) and everything else looks good.
:help: CAN SOMEONE WHO REALLY KNOWS INVERTS HELP ME OUT ????

Probly just stired up the nitrates and should settle back down over time but still should do regular changes to control the normal developing nitrates untill you can get the fuge going. IMO, change as much as you want, 40 or 60 percent, wont hurt anything to do a large water changes.

Well you can do really large water changes but you need to make sure the Ph and SG are the same as the tank water

Thanks ya'll, but how often is regular and how bout when everything is back to normal? Some say to do little to no water changes if everything tests normal and all life is active and healthy. :happyfish What do ya'll think?

I do 10% weekly when all is "OK", bigger if nitrate or phosphate start to elevate.
How often and how much is a hotly debated subject around here!
10% weekly or 20% every other week would be good IMO.
Good Luck!

Some people dont do any water changes, but they normally have tons of live rock, deep sand beds and fuges for very effective filtration and test for depleated elements like calcium, iodine, magnisium, ect. and add as nessecery.
One reason to do water changes is because the salt mix contains these elements and you replace them in the proper amounts ( every brand claims ) with the new water as well as removeing bad stuff ( nitrates, phophates, ect. ) that may build up in the system over time that the filtration can not remove because its not good enough.
IMO, water changes cant hurt. How often, up to you and your system and test results. I change 25 percent every month or so in mine.

Thanx ya'll..... As for debate.... its hard to know what is right and wrong with saltwater tanks in general because so many say completely different views about alot of things..... I would love to have a saltwater educated person
to take me under their wing and share some greatly needed info on salt tanks..... I always say to all my friends when I "bore" them with talk of my tank that no one will EVER know all there is to know about salt water and thats the whole point of it. Thats what makes it so interesting..... I have so much life in my tank and I wanna do all I can to take care of it as best as I can..... I think I may post a want ad, LOL.
