Not washing the new protein skimmer?

I have a 20 gallon tank filled with 2 electric blue damsels and 2 white striped damsels. one flame scallop, one horseshoe crab, urchin, and a mushroom.
The tank has been running for abot 2 months w/o any problems. Recently i purchased a Sea Clone 100 protein skimmer from work (17 dollars!) and put it in my tank. After it was running, i then read the directions which said to rinse the skimmer. I didn't think it was that necessary. But soon after my blue damsels started getting sick and died, then the striped ones. I did a 30% water change on the discovery of my 3rd dead fish.
Currently the last damsel is surviving. looks like he's freaking out, but he's been living for the last 2 days. The urchin is going bald. but the scallop and the horseshoe crab look fine.
I"m not sure if it was the unrinsed skimmer.....or that i had a star fish that i was trying to get to regenerate after its leg was ripped off. it grew a dead animal fungus on it so i threw it out that day too. I don't think it did it, becuase i had it contained in a plastic cup inside the tank. Not sure what exactly is killing my fish and what to do.
Any suggestions?

I would remove the skimmer immediately. Likely the instructions said to wash, to remove any type of construction residue that was on the equiptment.
Do a major water change.
What are your water readings?
