Ever seen one of these? Shop said it was a kind of Nassarius snail. Thought I'd give it a try, picked up four of them. Also got a couple of nice Trochus snails.

Pretty cool huh? They dug right into the sand bed once I had acclimated them. The new Trochus
appear to be not as nocturnal as my first couple... they are staying out and being active with the halide on. Looks like I have 3 different species of Trochus
and also 3 different species of Nassarius
now.

I plan to, but judging by the way they flew across the sandbed just like the Tongan Nassarius snails I have and also the shape of the foot, I am pretty sure that's what they are.

I was most scared when I was holding it for that first picture, I was thinking "Sure hope this thing doesn't bite!"

Heh.. saltwater can be scary... seeing as how there are snails that can literally kill you.. i'd hate to be the saltwater newbie who gets one of those as a hitchiker in their tank and decides he is gonna play with it.

There are alot of things from the ocean that can kill you. And none of them have a nice rattle on their tail to warn you when you get too close.

That is an awesome snail! Please post the name here if you have any luck finding it. I would love to have a couple of those in my tank.

I'm pretty positive that it is a type of Nassarius. Now, where you could find some, I dunno. I asked the guy at the store and he said the price list from his distributor just said fancy nassarius snails... He was selling them 7 bucks a pop or 4 for 25. So I got 4.

I would have to say that marine animals that use poison as a defense usually do give warnings (bright colorations) because what is the point of bieng poisonous, or toxic, and nothing know until it is to late for the poisonous/toxic animal? And most of the cone snails are quite colorful. (though, cone snails don't use their poison for defense (usually) )
This includes Zoanthids, and Polythoas (and similair genuses).

Thats why I always recommend wearing GLOVES!!!!

Odd thing is that there is a store in the mall here, it sells nothing but fossils and snail shells and stuff like that. I purchased about 9 shells that look EXACTLY like the one the snail in the second pic is in (the top one). I can probably call them tomorrow and find out what the name of the shells are. That should give you a relatively good idea about what kind of snail you are dealing with.
