I found him on the carpet behind the tank. I heard someone splashing around last night but didn't think he was going to jump! My largest of the two clown fish, Marlin, decided he wanted no more of his home and manged to squeeze himself inbetween the one inch opening near my HOB filter

WHY!!!!!!!!! I've heard of other fish jumping, but why would a clown fish?! I thought they were so docile!

Sorry, I know how sad it is to loose a clown. Do you have moonlights? If you heard splashing, there was something stalking him, and he got got spooked and jumped. If you don't have moonlights, they help to let the fish know what is creeping up on them so they are not spooked when lights are off.

I wonder if my flame hawkfish was chasing him, I don't have any crab inverts, just snails. The other fish are his clown buddy, hawkfish, and 2 damsels. The hawkfish is the only guy that's been entered recently (memorial day) but they had been getting along. My fish would always relax on the top of the water right next to the filter intake tube, so he was half the tank away (29 gallon bowfront) from my hawkfish's sleeping quarters.
I should've have paid more attention to the splashing!!

Sorry for your loss.

There is always a reason to why our fish jump. It could have been the hawkfish bugging/attacking the clown or maybe even the damsels. It could also be something hiding in the live rock that you don't see, but the fish know is there that spooks them. Also if your fish stay near the top or top corner of the tank I believe there may be a crab or some kind of hitchhiker in your tank that is spooking the fish.

The clowns have always hugged around the surface when sleeping, the 2 damsels have little coves in the liverock that they stay in. I haven't seen anything in the liverock, and it was out of the water for 8 days last year while I was moving (tried to get the algea build up off of it since it was mostly deadrock) But, as I've seen and read, when it comes to saltwater tanks anything is possible... I'll be keeping an eye out on my other fish to see if they start acting strange. If so, then I'll bite the bullet and remove the liverock and a good scrubbing, fresh water soak, and drying out to save the other fish!

UMM, I don't understand why if a fish was spooked you would blame the live rock???

To start with...damsels are evil, they may well stay put in the light, but go nipping and hunting when they know other fish are vulnerable. I am sure what spooked the clown was a fish...not the rock or a worm in the rock. Why would you kill off the live rock and damage your best filtering system?

Again...do you have moonlights? Moonlights will reveal a night stalker and allow the fish he ability to escape because they can see it coming and not get spooked into jumping.
