I had the same goby and it did the same thing the day after i bought it. I had my arm in the tank for 10 minutes moving the sand around looking for it and then i saw the open part in my lid, then i looked to the left of my tank and i saw it.....stiff and coverd in fuzz.

Did you ever wash out the sand before you put it in your tank.

I have a Diamond Goby and we love him. Yes, he sifts through the sand and makes tunnels under the rock, that's what they do. I recommend researching any live item being considered for adding to a tank before buying them.
I never rinsed my Live sand because if I did I would have killed most of the life in it. Yes, at time the goby makes a bit of a cloud when making a new tunnel but it clears up quickly and my tank is clear 99.5% of the time, besides that it's worth it to have a nice well groomed sandy tank bottom.

Oh and one more thing. If you don't want the jumping fish to jump out of the tank (and there are a lot that will) then go up to Home Depot and get a sheet of egg crate (used as flourescent litghting covers) and cut it to the size of the top of the tank or openning where they are jumping from. this will keep them in. I got lucky with my Yellow watchman goby before I got the egg crate. He jumped out of the tank and landed in the refugium...hehehe
I didn't see him for about 2 months, he was skinny but alive and healthy, probably eating pods.
