Ocean sand

my question is would it be ok to use in my mixed tank or would it be unsafe? my thought was to use it as a substrate in the fuge

From where? If locally, it is probably siliceous sand, and IMO not the best especially if right on the beach. This sand is composed of grains erroded from things like granite, which contains various minerals that may not be the best for the tank. I tend to prefer blank slate sort of situations, and carbonate sands.

the sand would be from Ocean City MD. but from what you said it doesn't sound like a good idea.
