Oceanic Bio-Cube help

I need some help getting my brain wrapped around a few issues withmy Bio-Cube. Right now , I only have 2 firefish and a small clean up crew.
I'm interested in putting some easy softies such as zoas and shrooms in the tank. My question is how to do the lighting cycles. Do you guys actually do a lighting cycle for these tanks? As far as I can tell, the lights (actinic and daytime) are controlled by seperate switches but plug into the wall via the same plug. I know I could keep both switches on and plug into a timer for a light cycle. However , how would I go about having the actinics on an hour before and after the daytimes like in a normal reef?
Is this possible? If not, is it not really necessary? Obviously tons of you have nano reef tanks. Thanks for the help and sorry if these q's are stupid as I'm a newb to the nano thing.
Thanks

Hi there!~

I have my lights on a timer.... The actinic and daylights plug into a separate timer. At work, for my 29 Biocube, the actinics come on at 8am, off at 6pm, daylights come on at 9am, off at 5pm. At home, for my 14 Biocube, the actinics come on at 12noon, off at 10pm, daylights on at 1pm, off at 9pm.

You'll need two timers. Each bulb has it's own plug. Most people have the actinics come on one hour before the daylights and stay on one hour after to simulate dawn and dusk. But the lighting schedule is up to you. I'd say no more the 12 hours, no less the 8. Algae and heat issues will determine your photo period. Just keep an eye on things and adjust accordingly. How long have you had the cube?

coralife dual power center.
act's on at 2pm, 10k's on at 3, off at 8:30, act's off at 9:30.
when the act's are on, the moonlights are off, and vice versa.
