soon I am getting an octopus,I've read you have to put them in a different tank to feed them. Is this true? If so, how do you get them out without making them "ink"? Thanks for your help!

wow ur getting a octopus that is what i always wanted when i was a child but then i did some research on them and decided against it. they are very hard to keep alive from what i heard and they dont live long in the home aquarium, but i have not seen that you have to take them out of the tank to feed them. i heard to just feed them in the tank they are in and they will eat anything in there so they have to be alone.
what size of tank are you putting it in ? let us know how it goes, hope all is well.

never heard that before. You dont need to put them in any diff tank.
I never did on any of the octo's I have owned.

thanks for your help, it's a 20 g tank for about a 4 inch octopus.

I assume you've done your research on keeping an octopus. They need absolutely pristine water conditions and you will need to completely seal your tank otherwise they can and will escape on you. They will also eat just about anything else you have in the tank with them.

20 gallons for an octopus? I know nothing about octopus other than about how smart they are... but this sure seems small for any size octopus doesnt it?

Keeping an octopus isn't as hard as most articles make it sound. I've successfully kept 2 diffrent species, a Bimac and a dwarf that even an expert in England couldn't identify. By "successfully" I mean from capture/birth to the natural end of their lives. Both were females and both laid their eggs and passed away. Routine water changes, an oversized skimmer, and an oversized filter is all you really need. As far as sealing the tank its a cheap and easy thing to do. Take a piece of "eggcrate", trim it to fit the tank. Take a fiberglass screen repair kit and wrap the eggcrate with it, ziptie it to the eggcrate. The screens openings are way too small for the octopus to to fit through AND it also cuts down on the lighting (they're not fond of bright lighting). If you have any other questions I'de be more than happy to help you where I can.

As, you've probably read either by posts or through your research, the need pristine water conditions. The other problem with them, especially a smaller one at 4" is that they can squeeze through even the tiniest hole. The only solid or hard part is their beak. As long as that fits through, they have no problem squeezing the rest of their body through. They also happen to be one of the smartest ocean animals there is. This being said, if there is even the smallest crack or hole in your system, they will find it. They are extremely intelligent.
Good luck!

I dont know..I have had 4 octos in my time so far. I really dont find them all that hard to keep. Only downfall is they have such a short life span..so you might get screwed and get one thats got some age and might die in 2weeks. I have kept all the ones I have had in 20g tanks. Longest I have had one was for around 10months..wich is about as much as u will usually get from a Bimac in captivity since they have about a 1.5yr life span...Just keep the tank sealed as much as u can..they can get out of anything.

I am guessing you are getting a Pygmy(dwarf) octo if you say they stay 4" cause Bimacs get up to about 1.5feet fully grown

You could keep a dog in a closet too. Doesn't make it right.

If they're talking about getting an octopus from SWF.com then it's an Octopus Filosus (Carribean 2-spot Octopus) and it's going to get about the same size as a Bimac. I got one this past Tuesday and they are only about 4" at purchase.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I have no idea what the point of that would be.
