octopus questions

i recently saw a lfs sell an "atlantic octopus-med," and it was tiny. its head was about as big as my thumbnail. then just today, they had the same tag for an octopus with a head as big as my fist. could it be possible that the first octo was a pigmy or a baby atlantic that was miss labeled? how big do pygmy octopi get, and how could you tell the difference between the two species? i have been thinking about getting an octo for a long time, and have done a bit of research on keeping them in an aquarium, and i know about their escape risk and how to feed them, but there is little on how to tell different species apart. anyone with experience on the subject would be very helpful.
