OK, I have a MANTIS SHRIMP. How do I get rid of it?

Try to locate the lr it calls home. Carefully remove the rock into a pail and spray some hot water or seltzer water into the hole. He will jump right out so be careful. Then you can probably sell him to a lfs or a collector nearby. I've been hearing clicking sounds during the day so I'm preparing for the worse.

Thank goodness! I was getting ready to set up a species tank for the mantis if I discovered it. It sounds like a great specimen to study.

As long as you have a pistol shrimp, you might as well get a shrimp goby. I've always thought that symbiotic relationship must be kind of cool to witness.

A cup of bleach will kill any mantis shrimp in your tank :)
Unfortuantley it will also kill everything else including your LR and LS.
I wouldnt recomend it.

Yeah, don't do the bleach thing!!! I've also heard of injecting boiling water into the hole with a syringe - then get him with a handy net when he comes out. I haven't tried this but sounds ok if your LR is epoxied together. ;)

Ginger ale worked for me. I removed the piece of LR - injected his whole with a little bit of Ginger Ale from a Turkey Baster and he ran right out.
The Rock didn't even cycle when I put it back in the tank.
Took about 25 minutes from rock removal to rock replacement.

Heavenly Damsel- where are you in NC? I've been looking for someone to split the cost of live rock shipping with me. I'm in Wilmington.
Where did you order your rock from before?

I used to have a mantis shrimp in my tank. His home was a huge piece of base rock. I tried a mantis trap, but the only thing that happened was the brittlestar would try and get the bait out, and his arm would get snapped off. We call him Stumpy now!
I tried taking the rock out and flushing it with regular tap water, then I squirted some liquid calcium in the holes and another flush with tap water. But the only thing that killed was all the life on the rock.
When (long ago) the dwarf angel came down with ich, I put this rock in the QT with him and treated the tank (no, not with copper but on the box it said "harmful to inverts".....too bad the mantis didn't read the box) and afterwards, he never looked better!
So after we moved, the large base rock was placed in the lionfish tank and one morning the mantis was surveying his home when the lionfish swooped down from behind! Poor little mantis! <img src="graemlins//uhuh.gif" border="0" alt="[U-Huh]" />
My advise? Get a lionfish! j/k!!!
BTW, mantis click too.....
I know I wasn't much help, but I will offer my cyber support and hope you rid yourself of this pest!!! Good luck!! :D

bubbagump mantis shrimp are highly effecient predators. right now they have the fastest speed for any natural movement of any living species recorded (their claw speed)
there are 2 types the spearers and the hammerers. the spearers have long skinny claws and sneak up on a fish and

it with the claws. you never hear it or see it. they will go after fish much larger than it self also.
the hammerers have big claws that they use to smash shells on shrimp, clams, and snails. these are also the type that you hear the clicking from that is the bashing sound when they are smasing a shell.
here is an info site on mantis shrimp pics, info, and suggestions to remove them

everybody should check out the section stomapod gallery/ multimedia is has some movie clips that show you how fast these guys are 1 dismantling a crayfish, 2 catching a fish, and 3 smashing a snail. check them out

Justin...I am in Jacksonville. I ordered from SWF.com before with free shipping. Am considering placing an order tomorrow with Jeff's exotic fish in California depending on the shipping cost. The premium Fiji is $2.75 a lb and looks good in the pictures. Ordering another 88 lbs.

Will be calling them tomorrow to find out about shipping and comparing the price per lb with SWF.com. I was real pleased with the LR from this site....no hitch hikers though. I definitely don't want a mantis shrimp. Noticed they sell pistol shrimp on this site...are they bad to have in the tank? Also noticed they sold their peacock mantis...he was $99. WOW
