I am new to this board and keep seeing everyone trash the rio's. I have a rio 2500 and haven't had a problem YET. It has been in there for a little over a year, what are they known for doing? Just dying? My lfs reccomended it to me when I first started up but now I keep reading everyone refer to all the problems. Just curious.

Rio's, like any pump, will burn out. This is a fact and not an abnormal problem, they all do, some faster than others. But this too is not a problem. The problem I have is pumps taht like to burn and fill my tank water with smoke or blow a seal and seep some goo pinto the tank(not sure what it is). These things scare me, personally. And any pump with a rep for doing such things(a high % of the time) in my book, is not going ot be near the top of my list for purchases.

Thanks Guys, I replaced the rio 2500 with a maxi-jet 1200 for my feed into my refugium. so far it works just fine. Does anyone have the footprint size of the Mag 7 & 9.5? Thanks

well the mag-7 is about 5x5x5 in round numbers. Actually it's 4.5 in two of the dimensions which can vary because the pump can be mounted on any of the 4 sides so it depends on how you mount it HTH
