Old Live Rock

Does anyone have any idea how long Live Rock lasts without water flow/nutrients/light? A co-worker of mine took down his tank about 2 months ago and kept the live rock stored in bins filled with tank water...
He asked if I could use some.
I know after anything has been in a display tank for a while and it is maintained properly it will eventually become "live". Does anyone know if this would happen quicker in this case?
Thanks.

If there has been no movement in these bins then chances are that there will be a significant amount of die off. Take a look at the rock and smell it. If there are obvious dead things on them then scrub that off. Cure the rock in a clean bin with fresh saltwater, a heater, and a power head. There may be some life left on it. At the very least it will be base rock.
