I have read and been told that when you buy a Percula Clown you should do so in pairs. Can you get away with just one in your tank or should you really have 2 so they don't get so lonely and stressed?

you can get just one. I've had one in my tank for a couple years. It's buddies with my bangaii cardinal. But the more you buy the happier your lfs guy will be...

1 percula in the tank is fine unless you eventually want a mated pair, BUT THAT is a different story.

If you wish to buy one now, and then eventually have it mated with another, just make sure that the new one is smaller than the more established one. They will fight for weeks on end before they pair up, and even after that they will have their little love spats. However as stated above, if you wish to hae a Mated pair in the future, it is smart to go ahead and buy them as a pair in the first place.
