i dicided to go with electronic ballasts....that way you can run any bulb with good life time and output... i hear the PFOs are awesome for light output but not so much for bilb lifetime....but if you have the cash then go for it your coral will grow like weeds if everything else is fine

This is what I was told by the company I bought my retro kit from.
If you get the standard balasts then (at least for 175 watt) the max bulb will be a 10000K. With pulse start you can use up to the 20000K.
I passed on the $15/ballast upgrade, you shouldn't.:nope:

So i would be better served getting a pulse start. donmgicwon what bulbs do you run and how do you like the spectrum. Jugger, I wanted electronic as well but as of now the PFO are the more affordable choice. Have you used standard ballasts before and if so what is the heat difference in ballasts. My 175 MH's are Coralvue 10000K (white). The higher K the bluer it gets.
