I have been looking for/at one of these for a while now, and finally got one. What is this sore on the side of him? I removed carbon and started melafix treatment for it today. Any other recommendations?

Nitrate 5

He was the only one currently in the tank when I bought him but im not positive what used to be in there other than 2 peices of LR. And 100% Im positive my clowns or scooter bleny didnt do this either.

Did he have that mark when you bought him? Melafix is pretty mild. Keep a close eye on the area. If you notice it becoming more red then you may have to treat him in a qt. Add vitamins to his food to help boost his immune system.

He did, but, it was much smaller, it seemed bigger after the terrible hour long car ride home, he seemed quite stressed during acclimation also. What kind of vitamins would you recommend? Im feeding formula 1 frozen, formula 2 flake, and oraglo(which he wont eat).
What do you mean it is quite mild? Is there anything else you would recomend?

Since he is in the display tank, there is nothing much you can do. You can't treat the display with medications. Try improving diet, and moving away from flake foods. Use zoecon as a supplement on food and you may want to try soaking your meaty foods in garlic for the next couple of weeks. Fresh garlic is needed. There is info on this in the FAQ Thread at the top of the Disease Forum.

Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this? Another fish attacking him maybe?

My best 'guess' is that it is an external wound with a secondary infection. Beth and Sep are very good in this 'disease' forum and I would trust their judgement on treatment. External wound could either be from another living tank inhabitant (fish/invert) or 'self inflicted'.....hitting jagged rock edge....
Pristine water conditions and immune bolstering or stimulation is your best course of action.

Well Ive tried zoecon on his formula 2 flake, with no change, you said to stay away from flake so I got some formula 2 pellet and "zoeconed" that also, with no avail (he doesnt like this as much as the flake either). What other foods would you recomend? He is still eating and acting normal, the spot just wont go away, can someone please help!
Edit: Heres an updated picture, the spot doesnt look red in real life nor does it unless I use the flash.

Frozen formula. Flakes and pellets are okay for some fish, although I wouldn't necessarily recommend those. Tangs like foods closer to natural. Frozen formulas have a variety of fresh seafoods and plant/ algae in them. You can also make your own foods and freeze them. That is best because you can tailor the mix to what your fish's diet needs. Either way, add zoecon or selcon and fresh garlic to the foods. It does not look very infected, but it does look raw. Do you have a spare tank that you can cycle? With how open that looks, I would not be surprised if it does get infected.

So formula 2 frozen then? I have a spare 10 gallon, but what good would it do to set that up? Is there another type of medication I could us in it that I couldnt use in the DT? How would I go about making my own food? Also should I consider a type of seaweed or something on a vegi clip?
Should I stop the melafix? If I do stop it, would it be ok to start running carbon again?

There are many formula foods that are frozen. See what your LFS has. My fish prefer the ones in a flat package as apposed to the cubes. They REALY won't touch the ones with a gel binder. The use of the qt would be to medicate him with Maracyn 2 for SW fish. That will treat any surrounding infection so that the wound can heal. For homemade foods, look in the Common Treatments FAQ located at the top of the disease and treatment page. It is post #8. Yes, add nori to a clip, soak it in fresh garlic first. Those directions are in the same FAQ. Carbon removes medication and makes the water more crystal clear, there is no reason to add carbon right now.

The only kind of ocean nutrition that I can find is formula 1 or 2 frozen or prime reef in cube form. Can you be more specific as to what you would recomend, (maybe a link to it, everything I see is the cubes with the gel binder). I will start cycleing a qt tomorrow, could I pull tank water for most of it and fill the rest with fresh RO?
Only reason I asked about carbon was that I had it in there previously and miss the crystal clear water.

The food that I buy is from Pro-Salt, I have also used foods from San Fransisco Bay Co. The QT can use a cup or several of sand from your DT, this sand will stay in the qt or be thrown out. Use all water from your DT. If you have any LR rubble that can be discarded afterward that will help, if not then use rock that will be removed when you add the medication.

I should be able to cram it in there, totally different kinds but I think if I trim it it will work. Does frozen food come in anything other than cubes?

Yes, it comes in flat packages. You just break off what you need.

bacterial infection? the lack of history on this fish makes it hard to tell. I feed my fish formula 2 flake food and some spectrum chiclid pellets of the really small size.
I had similar problem on another type of fish on my own tank, but that is most likely caused by contaminated food source. I would watch closely to see if the sore gets any bigger at all. My puffer fish died within 2 days of showing signs of infection

No unfortunatly, no improvement, Im running out of ideas? I bought zoe and extreme garlic and have been soaking spiralina, formula 2, and frozen brine shimp in it. For over a week Ive been using the zoe with no change and almost 2 weeks since I initially started melafix with no change at all.

How is the qt coming along? The next step is to treat him with Maracyn 2 for SW fish. With the infection gone, it should heal quicker.
