Are you doing fish-only or reef?? What you need depends greatly on what you're keeping. Please save yourself alot of trouble by not buying the magnum, they really, really suck in my opinion.

First you must understand that there a thousand filters or combinations of filters that you could use, and probably an equal amount of opinions. If you have the money go buy yourself a wet/dry and skimmer. Otherwise the canisters are a good way to go (but only the new fluvals, as they are easiest and best, trust me on this) configured with the proper media they will take care of all aspects of filtration. If you have a larger tank try using two, one on either end. This has worked great for me. And live sand isn't neccessary for a fish-only set-up. Good Luck

the rock says....
w/d and protein skimmer, live rock, plenum or live sand, powerheads, set it up properly and it will take care of itself
