I currently have:
2 clowns
1 hippo
4 green chromis
1 kole tang
1 neon dottyback (I guess, I never see it)
1 coral beauty
How many more do you think I could safely keep? I don't want to overdo it but I would like a few more if possible.
Also wondering about my 46g qt. Does anyone keep fish in theirs so it doesn't sit empty?

All depends on the rockwork.
If lots of rockwork then I would say add a couple more homebodies. (lawnmowers, hawks, etc)
If the tank is for the most part open, then maybe another swimmer or two.

I usually keep mine empty except for a small amount of chaeto, and I 'ghost feed' 1-2x weekly to keep the bacteria for proper nitrogen cycling intact.

That is what I was looking at (blennies and hawks) I have about 80/90 lbs of rock. I was wanting one more medium size fish but hadn't decided on what to get. It is so hard to stop, oh no, not a bigger tank.... Just kidding, my hubby would kill me. Well, maybe not, then there wouldn't be anyone to take care of the tank, or the dogs or...

I don't do any feeding, I didn't know I needed to. I have about 5 inches of sand so would I still need to feed?

I personally have always been a reef guy. Just me but the Chromis are just taking up space in the line for the restroom if you know what I mean.
I would swap out the Chromis and feel like I was getting more bang for my buck in regards to bioload by replacing them with say...
Two small wrasses, and a lawnmower. Someone/something that would make work of the rockwork but keep the tanks activity balanced for viewing.

I got the chromis before I knew much about this hobby. I sure wish they weren't in my tank but they are. I have had no luck on catching anything in my tank when I needed to other than a complete tear-down. I guess they are here for the duration. Wonder how long they live?
