ORA Hawkins Echinata

I picked up a ORA Hawkins Echinata frag about a month ago. So far it is doing great, with a lot of new growth and has now completely encrusted the frag plug and is starting to spread to the epoxy I mounted it with. I noticed that it only opens it polyps at night. I was just wondering if anyone has one that gets PE during the day. The picture is from a month ago, and since has grown pretty good.

mine (same ORA echinata) shows the most polyp extension at dawn (first couple hours of lights on) then closes up for the rest of the day. the polyps will open during feeding time too. since my growth rate is relativly quick i dont worry about it anymore. I would say this echinata photosynthsizes very well and has little need for all day polyp extension for organismal feeding. though it definatly doesnt seem opposed to opening when food is sensed in the water.

Thanks for the info. I was supprised at how fast it has been growing. Also it has a nice blue green color that I can not seem to capture correctly on my camera.

unless Im mistaken, its more of a deepwater coral and they seem to typically just have less PE during the day.
I have a yellow deepwater that I believe is A. caroliniana and it only has PE at night.

Thanks, I didnt realize it either when I bought it. I knew it was a deepwater SPS, which is what I was looking for. I will try to take a picture this weekend and post it to show the change.

I really need to start keeping track of my camera settings I use when I take pictures so I can get the same colors.

in the right conditions quite quick. here is may 08 to september o8 pictures for comparison. keep in mind I have fragged 2 1 inch frags and a 3/4 inch frag off this colony in between that time. you can see in the first picture I have just clipped a small frag off the front of it.

just so you know this was grown under 440w VHO lighting less than 6 inches below the surface. it is now under 2x 250w metal halides in the same position (almost directly under one of the bulbs in 6 inches of water) I also Feed my tank really heavy and do a LOT of waterchanges, actual growth rates will vary depending on lighting and food availability as well as water parameters. the color change made me very happy when I bought it it was mostly brown and took about a month to start really coloring up.

LOL sounds like a coral salesman disclaimer....past coral growth and coloration does not guarantee future results...

I was thinking almsot the same thing when I was typing it. sounds like an info mercial trying to get people to sell junk products "actual income may vary, be your own boss, your income limited only by how much you want to make!!!"
