Orange growth on LR?

Bonermeister, Yes there are bubbles coming from it! Is that bad? It has been on the LR since I received it 4 weeks ago. I can remove it if it is bad!

it looks like some sort of sponge to me. most bad algae trap air bubbles in the like cyno but this doesnt look like any type of cyno to me..
the bubbles might be collecting on it from photosynthesis or something. I dont think its anything to worry about though.
IMO

Mike, You have lots of color on your rock and I what the same, so I will hope the little sponge makes it. I am upgrading my lighting in a few weeks. I am sure sponges need excellent lighting.

Hi. I don't think that you have to worry about lighting for the sponge, they are not photosynthetic. IME they grow in more shaded areas of the tank, behind rocks and such. Good luck with it if it is indeed a sponge.

Are bubbles will clog the small pours in the sponge, causing it to slowely soffocate. Air is not something you want to get in contact with the sponge.
FWIW,
Sponges do not have any zooxanthellae, and are therefor, non photosynthic. They do best with low amounts of lighting, to prevent any algal growth to start forming on the sponge. Algae will clog the pours of the sponge, causing that area to die off within a matter of weeks/months. Sponges will require strong amounts of currents to discurage any algae growth, as well as help with the filter feeding process. Most likely, I wouldn't worry about the sponge too much.
MichaelTX,
Your 'Sponge' actually resembles the form of a species of Limpit, rather than a sponge.

When I upgrade my lighting I will turn the rock over so it is not exposed to direct light. I will try to remove the bubbles. The tank is cycling (4 weeks Wednesday) and I have bubbles on the rock and sand. Thanks for the info on lighting. I would have left it in direct light after upgrading to MH 250 watt and it probably would not have made it. Now that I know it is a sponge I can do some reading on sponges. Thanks Lorin

it diffenately a sponge. there are to big holes and lots of much smaller ones that dont show up in the pic.there are several holes not to clear in the that pic there are about 10 of them on this single rock edge. this is the larger of the 2 though.
as said above they do not need light they filter water into them and pull what they need out, hair algae and such will kill them along with air bubbles that get trapped in them( thats why you never expose soponges to air.)
here is another pic of the same one a little larger though.
as far as color the rocks I first got had very little color on them the rocks are finely starteing to color up nicely just taking time. of course if I would the tank along and quite upgrading it would do better. ;-) this is the second tank for these rocks and they are abou to get moved again.
first was a 30 that went into a 50 and I am working on getting my 100 ready for the 50 to go into.
