Have any of you guys ordered fish online? I'm brand new to this-had my fishtank up a week now. If you have ordered them how did your experiance go? Is it worth it to you to pay the shipping and handling? Iwork in the Postal career and I know that boxes get dropped. I just talked to a delivery guy from a company that ships a lot of live animals. He said htat they're just in a hurry to get their packages out. So the boxes get tumbled around and he said that the temp is so hot now. What about the guarntees? Lemme know anything you know. Thanks!

I order all of my fish online cause my LFS sucks! I've only had one fish that was dead on arrival and I've ordered over 40 fish online. We can't post any competitors websites on here but this site is a pretty good retailer. You can't go wrong with any website that guarantees their fish to arrive alive and healthy. Just read the websites guarantee policy as they all differ from one another. All online retailers (or at least the ones I've ordered from) put cooling packs in the styrofoam boxes with the fish to battle the hot temps.

i bought fish thru the mail for the first time last week and it was not the best. the puffer i got died within 24 hours from what the customer service person told me was probably a bacterial infection from being in the bag and the butterfly fish had lymphocystitis(this went away completely after he was in my tank for about 5 days) they did refund me for the puffer.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but most LFS are having the Fish Shipped to them anyway. By ordering online you are cutting out the middle man. Unless you have the patience to watch a fish for a week in an LFS tank to make sure that it is healthy and eating, Buying from an LFS is not too much of a benefit over buying online.
I have occasionally recieved much larger or smaller fish than I was expecting, but otherwise no complaints.

I've ordered quite a few fish online if my LFS can't get a specific fish for me. If I can avoid, I'd like to buy all locally once I've seen the fish for myself and seen it eat.

Buying fish online is a bad idea if you can help it. Nevermind the shipping stress because, as previously stated, even fish at the LFS get shipped. However when you buy fish online you have no way of knowing that you are getting the most attractive specimen, let alone even getting a healthy fish. As previously stated, you don't have an opportunity to see a fish live in a store for a while and you can't see it eat. Additionally, the right size specimen often determines success or failure in the tank and there is no way to assure that you are getting a fish that is the right size for your setup. The prices are roughly the same by the time shipping is added to online orders. The only benefit I see to ordering online is that with all of the sites, you can find most fish that you may want. However I personally think it's a bad idea. JMO.

I'd have to both agree, and disagree with crimzy. Like I stated earlier, I've only lost one fish from shipping. Most fish arrive alive and healthy, and sometimes even eat the first day. I truly believe the key is proper acclimation and QT. On the other hand, I do agree that actually seeing what your buying is the way to go, but I will never again buy from my LFS because most of their fish have velvet. But no way is it a bad idea to purchase fish online, especially if you order from a good distributor that has a reputation for selling nice looking, healthy fish. If I live where you live crimzy, I too probably would'nt order online, but for people with just one LFS, it's a good alternative.

Yep, that's what I was thinking too. If you have a selection of quality LFS nearby, I would tend to buy more locally. However, if you don't have much available in your area, online is a great alternative. I've only done a couple of online orders (both were SWF.com), and so far I've had good luck with it. The key is to purchase from reputable suppliers, be it local or online, and you're bound to have good luck more often than not.

Ordering online has its perks.
They aren't going to sell you an unhealthy fish if they can help it. Why? Because they offer a 14 day guarantee, and if it dies before then, they replace it or credit the value of it back to you so if you lose the fish in the guarantee period, they lose the money. I have ordered many things online and really I don't think the mortality rate is that different from buying locally. Fact of the matter is in this hobby, some things just die no matter how experienced you are.
It's usually easier to find certain things you want to add to your tank online so that's another plus.
The best thing about buying locally though is that you get to hand pick the exact specimen you want, and when you get home you have exactly what you wanted, and there is no room for a packaging mistake because that does happen occasionally when you order online.
For the most part I'd say I've had good experiences ordering online.

I havent tried here (bought 1rst corals ever from here though) but 5 of my 7 fish in my last tank came from online and all arrived alive and healthy ordered on 3 seperate orders. none of my current fish came from online though. tank this small I need to be very particular about the sizes I get to maintain the peace. on small fish sometimes you get order sizes like 1-2" or 1-2.5". well there is a big difference between a 1" fish and a 2 or 2.5" fish when trying to choose compatibility in a small tank.

I've bought all my fish online (from this and 2 other sites) for years and have never had a bad experience. For me, price, guarantee, and convenience make shipping charges insignificant. I live in the boonies, but have a FedEx pick-up site 15 mins away. I have them delivered there, pick them up at 9AM; home delivery would be about 2-3PM, and have never had a damaged box or complaint. I have never received a fish that I wouldn't have picked myself. I'll never do it any other way. I have had fish die, covered by the guarantee, but; as said above fish do die and I think the loss ratio is excellent.
IMO; while the postal service has vastly improved (see what a little competition does!); FedEx is far superior when it comes to overnight delivery. Every box I get looks like it was never touched, much less dropped.

think about this.. how do your lfs order fish? they have to order them online/telephone to get them...
they end up fine most of the time. with some proper acclimation it should go good. i know swf.com has a15 day guarantee but if u dont want to risk it have your lfs order them and then just monitor them there for a few days,

The only reason I don't is because I want to pick which fish I want, and to do that online comes with a premium that usually eats away whatever discount I get from ordering online.

I've thought about this and here are some more reasons I like to buy fish online: 1.) Most/many lfs still acclimate fish by floating the bag in their tank. This is a terrible way to do this; the PH is always lower in the shipping bag and SG and who knows what else will differ also. When the fish comes to me, not only is it handled and bagged less often (less stress); I can acclimate and QT properly. 2.) Online buying helps eliminate "impulse fish buying". It seems that half of the fish questions on this forum are the result of someone buying that cute little trigger, or other fish, at the lfs and then finding out it just isn't a proper fish for their tank.I really suggest looking over several online dealers and then asking for advice on this forum before purchasing.3.) More selection. I know online sites are often out of many fish, which is understandable. But you can get wait listed and do research in the meantime. There are so many great fish available online that are seldom, if ever seen in most lfs. The lfs, naturally, wants to stock fish that sell well and are likely to stay alive until they are sold. Many fish simply don't look that great in the confines of a small lfs tank, but really come to light in the DT. Butterflies, wrasse, anthias, hogfish (a wrasse), unusual gobies, hawkfish, many angels, more unusual clowns, etc are just a few examples. The more difficult fish are almost never seen at the lfs (they can't keep them alive like we can, IMO), but are often available from the good online retailers. 4.) I know of very few lfs that guarantee fish for 15 days. 6.) Although, with a couple exceptions, you really can't pick the exact fish you want, online dealers are very accommodating if you want a to request a bigger or smaller specimen, etc.7.) Its easier td find the orogin of fish sold online. A little research will tell you the places that really police collection & shipping practices. I know there are plenty of great lfs owners and I'm sure it is a very tough business to compete in; but where I live, there just isn't a real decision, all things considered......This could go on and on, but I think I've yakked enough.

I probably have access to the best kind of a LFS ever. SW is his hobby and he orders corals straight from Australia and other countries, orders fish from a reputable dealer in CA and he orders what his customers are looking for. Today I just picked up a harem of Orange Lyretail Anthias (2 females) and Squarespot Anthias Male. Beautiful large size Anthias in excellent condition. I had mentioned that to him last weekend and he was able to fulfil my order this quickly. Also I had mentioned Coco worms to him earlier and he received 2 of those. + his pricing is far better than what I could get the same fish even online.

You're very fortunate. I had a dealer like that (until they retired) in Mississippi, prior to Katrina and moving to Tennessee. Now, just the price of gas to the nearest decent (not great) lfs is more than shipping.
