Maybe not as much as some think. As of today the state has decided to re-read a law concerning home-made beer and wine. As of today you can no longer have tastings at local home-brew club meetings, no more home-brew contest including the tradional one at the state fair which has been going on for 22 years and last but no less unbelievable, it is now ILLEGAL for me to take a six-pack over to my neighbors for a BBQ.
I trying to find out who or what organization is responsible for ruining the party, but the local buzz is this is just the first step on a home-brew crack-down. The state is loosing a lot of tax money because so many people are only drinking what they make themselves and I suspect that is the first place to look for the idiot who is pushing this.
So the cord of wood I bartered for beer this weekend makes me guilty of a criminal act.

Since when is taxing not a tennent of the liberal political ideology? They aren't cutting back on Homebrew parties for health or safety reasons. As you pointed out they are losing tax revenue.
How friggin un American is this? Ben Franklin I think is the one who said beer is proof God loves us.

I don't know, libs are not big on taxing things they enjoy. I will be keeping a close eye on this and will know who is behind it soon I'm sure. I was thinking maybe the major beer makers might be greasing the wheel since they have been destroyed by micro-brews and home-brewing. I have a feeling that Franklin would have described this as tyranny.

Beer is proof god loves us and wants us to be happy was the full quote.
You should brew your own, it's really not very hard.

LOL, I have a all-grain micro-brewery in my garage and very rarely buy store bought beer anymore, that is why I am pissed.

so according to my daughter you would be a drunkin' hippie!
just kidding. Hey whatever works imo. barter wood for beer...homemade or local brewed. Who cares. (even if its beer, beef, pork, veggies, furniture etc. whatever, its a legal trade) It will only cause more stress on the authorites. Are they going after wine/beer tasting or crack houses/drug raides/murders/abusers etc. Heck did you know that to get a passport you NOW effective 7/13 pay $35 MORE $$$$ ???

Ronald Reagan said that governments use taxes to control the behavior of people, which in turn stifles creativity and productivity. In this case the state is trying to make home-brewing as unappealing as possible to get you to buy taxed alcohol so they make more money. But I think it is more about stifling the sense of independence and self reliance that DIY types learn and enjoy. If you brew at home, well then maybe you will barter, then you may start to grow your own garden... That nightmare of untaxed people scares the h@ll out of libs. From what you stated the law covers, it really is more about deterring people from being more independent and keep them paying taxes like a good taxpayer, not citizen, should.

How are they going to enforce that? Gambling is illeagal in most states, but that doesn't stop people from having poker nights. Heck there was more than once that I took my last 20 bucks put it in the pot and went home with food money for the week while in college.

I agree, I have really gotten into the barter system in the last couple years and enjoy it.
