True. Oscars will dig in what ever you put in and very agressive and territorial. Also they may dig up any decorative plants you put in. They most likely will not bother with fake plants, but mine for some reason dug up real ones.

Listen to these people!
I've had oscars for the last 12 yrs or so, they will rearrange your tank to their liking! I never use a UGF because they just uncover it! I have had the best luck using a shallow bed of very coarse gravel. I'ts easy to clean up(they are very messy!), I vaccum the oscar tank once a week. I also run bio-balls in a canister filter to have a place for the good bacteira to colonize since I disturb the gravel so often!
Good Luck...

i also have oscars, they DO rearrange the tank, but mine have always left the gravel more or less in the same place. however, since that wasn't your question, i always go to a place like home depot and pick up 50lb bags of gravel there. it is literally the same gravel you can find at a pet store (of course you can find other kinds at the pet store too). home depot usually has a pea sized gravel that i usually get, used mostly for landscaping. as with any gravel, rinse it well before you put it in the tank. HTH

Hmmm... that's odd. I have an Oscar and he is probably the least dirty of all of my fish. My loach will dig in anything and everything. What plants I do put in the tank with the loach will be floating after a very short period of time. My turtle is horrible! This of course, is why he is in t he tank with the loach seperated from all other fish (except my psycho cichlid who attacks EVERYTHING). But my Oscar never touches anything. I guess it all comes down to the individual fish.

doesnt matter wht kind of gravel you get, mine messed everything up, i had a huge cave thing i bought, and he moved it 3 feet, also, no need too buy plants, they will eat it, or rip them up, the ones you burry, he took all of them up and theyre always at top of water.
