I am planning this years vacation and I am thinking of diving in Cozumel. I have been diving in Cayman and Nassau. I have read that Cozumel has the second largest reef in the world. We are thinking of staying at the Grand Cozumel by Occidental. Anyone have any info?
Thanks!

My cousin is a diver ( an I am working up the courage for him to teach me :nervous: ) and said Cayman was second to Austraila. We have been to both Cayman and Cozemel and snokeled so I can't say anything about diving personally, I loved both. But Tom really enjoyed Cozemel diving and I don't think you can go wrong.

I went in '98...it was fabulous. I went in the off season, and everything was really cheap. I did the whole week for about 800 including hotel and air thru a travel planner. Dives are cheap, too. I went with a non-diving friend, and was easily able to find other diving singles to buddy up with...

Cozomel is my favorite dive place with Malta being a close second and Grand Caymen third. The scenary was exceptional. The drift dives over the reefs in Cozomel is what got me hooked on saltwater aquariums.
I stayed at an all inclusive resort that included diving. I don't recall the name though.

I'm Going diving in Grand Cayman in about a month. I am sure the entire experience will be great but is there anything I should be sure to see?

Only ever dove one time, and it happened to be in Cozumel.
Beautiful! and what an experience. I stayed at the Allegro resort, which has some great beaches and diving right there. We too went in the off season and it was DIRT cheap, with beautiful weather, in July. And the people are nice.

I visited cozumel several yrs ago and did go snorkling. Very nice reef. Cozumel, though, is basically a tourist island...I mean that tourism is basically all that is there. It is pretty quiet, though, compared to the other Yucatan tourist locations. We took a trip over to chichen itza which was awesome. coz also has some myan ruins but didn't see that.
Some advise....do not ride public transporation bus anywhere. :scared:

Thats the truth......buts its a cheap way to get around if you can just hold on for dear life. I don't know how they keep up with the breaks on those busses!! (or do they??!!)
Your almost to 10000 Beth, whens the party?

Snorkling is #1 then Sting Ray City (all tourist stuff but really neat) and then the Turtle Farm. They have thousands of sea turtles that they save and raise to place back to sea. You can even pick up the little ones. We loved the water there, a little slice of heaven.
Don't forget the Rum at the airport on the way home!!

Been to Coz 3 years in a row and goin' back again in late March. Diving is great. Vis, animals, coral, walls, shallow dives. It offers alot. If you go to an all-inclusive thru funjet or apple check with your rep when you get there for packages. I had some great diving on small boats (not a ton of people bumping into you) with Black Shark and Dive with Martin. Went out of the resort 2 years ago at Iberostar and was on a cattle boat...but still had a great time. Email me if I can help.

THanks for the replies.
At Cayman try do dive the North wall. YOu can do that and sting ray city in a morning. THe North wall is a great vertical wall and is a drift dive. THe South wall and Eden Rock on the south end are nice because they are shore dives!!!!
Can u shore dive much in Cozumel?

yeah you can shore dive, and they also have a great drift dive, you just drift past the reef wall, and the current caries you, just make sure you pay atention, some people last year started drifting down the wall, they were all messed up from some thing, not a drug, but something that happenes to you when you dive, i forgot the name! but they mus have drifted down 150 feet, till somene saw them.
