Hey guys and gals,
I am heading for Glacier National Park (The one that is on fire) in a little over a week and I was wondering if anyone had any helpful hints to keep me safe along the way?
Any stores I need to check out? :p
I know that where I am traveling requires me to bring "Bear Spray" in case if a Grizzly decides to have me for lunch. I am bringing some high boots for snakes.........anything else I need to bring?

Ryebread,
I just came back from a motorcycle trip out west with a few other folks. Went through the Black Hills in South Dakota, Yellowstone and Tetons in Wyoming and went up to Glacier to find it in a burning inferno.
When we were up there they closed the road to the sun, evacuated the city of West Glacier, and closed US 2 along the southern edge of the park. You may want to phone first before you leave to check on the fire situation. After I got back to michigan I read they reopened the park, but just recently heard that they closed the west side of the park again.
It's a beautiful park, this would have been my second visit, but the fire postponed it needless to say. Don't worry to much about the Griz. Keep all your tolietries in a 1 gallon zip lock or 2 gallon to keep all the smells sealed up. If your bringing food keep it in the car in sealed bags and in a cooler.
You may want to rethink Glacier this year and take on the Black Hills or Yellowstone and Tetons. Either way its a beautiful place, the people in Montana and Wyoming seemed a bit peculiar at times but nice overall.

HEy Rye I was stationed in montana for about three years. I went to glacier about 9 times, mostly backwoods camping. Where are you going in glacier? If you are staying in any of the cabins you've got nothing to worry about. IF your backwooding it, make sure you have bear hangers for your bags, and rain gear...it can come out of nowhere. Where are flying into? If by some odd chance you fly into Great Falls, go to the McKenzie Brothers River Pizza resteraunt. They used to make Black Star beer, but man their pizzas are great. Glacier is hands down the best backwoods camping their is...followed closely by Mt. Lassen down here in cali. Good luck man, bring lots and lots of film. Do me a favour if you go over the old bridge can you get me a picture....you'll know what I'm talking about if you do.

Sounds like a nice trip if the fire doesn't cause you problems. I went thru the park back in the late 70's on my bike...beautiful place. One of the sweetest natural areas around. If you go get us some pics.....wanna borrow a camera? Just jokin"....by the way do we still owe you. I need to check with the wife on that too.
Be safe and have fun!
