OT: freshwater question

I'm toying with the idea of turning my 90 into a freshwater planted aquarium. I was thinking of using sand for the bottom. Not a hole lot maybe 1 inch or so. Now I know plants won't grow in just sand so what would I have to add to sustain plant life? Also how strong does the lighting have to be for plants? Thanks

slick i did one with kitty litter(clay) on the bottom and and inch of sand over the top and it worked good. i used reg flo strips but got the blue and 10k bulbs and it worked out pretty good.

alot of people use PC lights for planted tanks I have heard of people using NO lights but I never had any luck with them the plants always died on me (before I even thought I knew what I was doing ;-Þ).
but as substrait the sell a type of plant fertilizing substrate at alot of the LFS's I think flourite or something similiar. I would check into that and go from there.
