more time in the beginning of things, can't really tell you in hours. as far as actual time i spend doing specific things with my tank, i'd say it's not all that much. a couple hours a week maybe. you need to allow more time though if you run into probs. things can and do sometimes happen that require you to spend some time to make things right again. make sure you can make the long term commitment to a reef tank before you plunge in. hth

If you are talking about actual maintaince id say probably, 2 hours a week between my 2 tanks. If youre talking about time with the tanks, which would include staring for hours on end...I really dont know, ALOT of time :D !

A couple of hours a week of needed time and some other time just messing with it or watching it.

Like byrself said,
When things go wrong it can be time consuming. Ounce I had to catch and remove all fish do to an ich outbreak. That took about 4 hrs. On the average I spend 30 - 45 minutes a day doing misc stuff. Ounce a week doing water changes, cleaning filters, and testing water about 2 hrs. worth a week. Staring at tanks, can't count the hrs.

Tank size, setup, and livestock selection will make the difference.
That said I spend about 15-30 minutes a day on mine.

I spend about 30 minutes a week of maintanence(cleaning filters, emptying skimmer cup, water top-off,etc) on my 180 and about 30 min-1 hour on water changes, and about 20 minutes a week for feeding the sharks. In total, roughly 2 hours a week.
I spend like 1 hour a week on my 10 gallon reef. This includes feeding, water changes, testing, and anything esle I need to do.
Its really easy to maintain them now, in the begining it was harder and more time consuming.

Clean glass every other day - 5 minutes.
Feed fish every day - 5 minutes.
Top off water - 1 minute.
Water change every 4 to 6 weeks - 30 minutes.
Watching in amazement - priceless.
