other ways to control nitrates

what are best ways to control nitrates besides water changes? i have a 20 gallon tank which gets high nitrates pretty fast

A sump with macroalgae, less feeding and better filtration and clean up crew are a few.

First try to focus on why your trates jump high. Overfeeding? overstocked? Otherwise ther is macro algae (chaeto), deep sand bed just to name the obvious.

so a deep sand bed helps? mines about an inch deep... is more better?

research for yourself on that SSB abd DSB both have pros and cons. I personally dont like a DSB because I have ahd one crash on me but they do help in reducing nitrates.
how fast are the nitrates going up. usually regular water changes and a good skimmer will help keep the nitrates in check .
