Our Sebae Anemones

We just wanted to share these pics of our anemones. We had tried many times with BTA, but never had luck. One day decided to try one of these. The name of them at the store said White Sabae, but after a few months, it started to turn tan and in about 6 months, doubled in size. So in the last few months, we bought another. It is still on the white side, but is beginning to turn tan.

Not to mention, it's been happy under some of the rock. Not all lilght reaches it, but it is starting to turn tan. The camera just didn't pick up all the color.

I'll post another pic tomorrow, but comp. won't read the memory card for some reason... Maybe the tan will show up a little better then.

We feed the anemones twice a week... krill...they don't like brine shrimp. They are kind of picky. Really.... it is doing good.

Most anemone's are bleached when you buy them. The picture to the right that you see of him where he's bright white, is not a healthy coloring for a Sabae anemone. Most of the time, they become bleached during capture (due to stress/malnutrition). In healthy form, they are actually dark red-brown, with purple tips (like in the 2nd picture).
I found this on another web page.....

While our lights are probably not rated to the standards of a sabae, we can not help that it regained it's natural coloring. Please check out the pics on the web page. He shows what a healthy one looks like and a bleached one. However, we were told that our lights would be fine for a BTA, they always perished with in a few weeks or months. Our tan Sabae has been with us over 2 years (knock on wood) and the one beginning to turn tan, a few months. I'd say, somehow, someway, we are doing something right.

We do feed him, like I said, 2x a week, which of course helps. Now I am afraid if we add higher lighting, it may get "burnt". I don't know. All I can say is bta's were not working for us and I told my hubby "no more"! I realized we were not doing them any good. We were supporting the trade of these little creatures and not providing them a good home. Then one day, the hubby saw the first one. It was white and I was a bit concerned. But it was labeled "white" sabae. Thought maybe that was the color it was supoosed to be. It survived and we were excited and then showed signs of turning tan. At first I thought that was wierd, but my hubby said that it was regaining it's natural color. For once, he was right.
The tanner sabae does move around the tank, but doesn't stray far from it's original spot. It opens and closes, but has never looked sickly in any way. We don't expect our anemones to last forever, but while we have it, we will continue to help it thrive.

Thanks...my husband takes a lot of pride knowing he has taken such good care of them. And our pair of clownfish never know which one to go to, so they use both. Like your main home and a summer home. If you look closely, you can see Nemo and her friend had a batch of eggs under the newer anemone. Unfortunately, we have no learned how to properly get the eggs to hatch and survive. That's a whole different forum!

Where is merril. I think there must be something in the Wisconsin water for seabes. I have one that I have had for year or so that is doing great. I first had it under PC and a couple different t5s but now it is under 4x54 t5 with indvidual reflectors and doing better than ever. I feed once or twice a week when I don't forget. Krill reefbeef clam squid even a little salmon.

Merrill is about 20 mi. north of Wausau. (hubby says 15mi, but I wasn't born here, so what do I know). Hubby has Coralife Lunar Aqualife Compact Fluorescent Strip Lights 48in. 260 watt (4-65watt). I know everyone says these anemones must only have MH, but how can I argue that point when ours are doing so well? I don't think anyone can predict nature. I am sure feeding them meaty foods helps alot. When we first tried BTA's, we were told invert food was enough. After many tries and deaths, we realized they needed more and for a while brine shrimp worked. But BTA's always died. Sabaes have just worked for us. Even without MH.
P.S. There's a frag swap at the end of the month up in Rhinelander you should check out if you can. We went last year and had a great time. Going again this year.
