My home phone bill from BELLSOUTH/AT&T is just ridiculous, for just having the line turned on its running around $60... I know this was brought up a little whiles back, but what was the final tally? ABOUT tmobile $10/local service, VONAGE, MAJIC JACK? I just need a dial tone and dont need LONG DISTANCE if its not thrown in anyway. BUT here is something I was curious about.. DOESNT BELLSOUTH control the phone line so If I cancel their service they just turn off the line? Im not sure...

I'm with ya. I was the one who asked the question. The majority vote was Vonage with a couple of Magic Jack users. I'd love to go with Magic Jack because it's only 19.99 a year but there are mixed reviews. I guess for that price it's worth a shot. Some users use Magic Jack as their only connection, others use Magic Jack for long distance and keep their land line for local calls. I'm still not sure what i'm going to go with.

I've had Vonage now for almost 5 years. I got in when they had the 500 minutes/month, and I pay around $19 total each month. All long distance is covered, essentially Worldwide. Since it's VoIP, I can take my Vonage router anywhere in the world, and hook it up to an Internet connection. If someone calls my home phone number, it'll ring on the phone that's attached to my Vonage router, and look like a local call. I could be in China, and someone could call my house, and I could pick it up there. No extra charges. The only downfall to Vonage or any other VoIP service, is you're dependent on you Internet connection being up all the time to recieve calls. So if you lose power to your house, you lose power to your Internet modem and router, thereby losing your phone service. I have ATT U-Verse for my internet provider. I just put their router and my Vonage router on a UPS. They've stayed up almost 3 hours when I had a power outage. If I do lose my service, I have it where any phone calls to my house are automatically forwarded to my cell phone. If a call goes to voice mail, I have it set up where I get a copy of the message emailed to me. So I can hear my voice mails anywhere I have access to my email. The only other caveat is 911 service. If you call 911, you're not actually talking to your local 911 service. I think it's a national-type 911, and they forward your call to your local 911 emergency operator. Never had a situation where I've needed it, so I don't know what the delay difference is between calling 911 on a normal land line, and doing it over a VoIP phone line. The only other thing about VoIP service, is if you have a home alarm system that's monitored by a company, it won't work anymore. Most services like ADT require a land line phone system (at least they used to. They may have the capabilty to go over VoIP now.) If not, there's a service from Alarm.com that can use your existing wiring and contacts with their system. They communicate with the monitoring station via cellular or satellite (not sure which one). This is nice because a burglar has no way of cutting your phone line to disarm you alarm system.

Nothing can be worse than my Time Warner digital phone service. I can't tell ya the number of times my phone and cable has been out. And I hate their people.
Not only did one of them blantantly lie to me but he put me without phone service (and internet) for an additional 6 hours because of that lie.

Really? I love Time Warner. I never have issues with my phone/internet/cable services at all, unless of course I don't pay them

Taxes and fees add just over 50% to my home phone bill. I may have to look into the vontage thing.

Vonage still offers 500min/mon for 14.99 so about 19 after taxes. Remember vonage has a 2 year agreement so if you don't like it your stuck with it. i think its $180 early termination fee.

Time Warner sucks!!!!!!!!! Our service is out on the average of once a month, and it's out for days at a time. It usually takes 3-4 days for some idiot to come out and tell us he doesn't know what's wrong, then we have to wait another day or so for some other idiot to come out. And the people do outright lie. It is absolutely the WORST service I have ever had from any company, EVER. Unfortunately for us it's about the only option we have here.
