Overcrowding?

What is the recommended ratio of gallons of water to inches of fish? I hear that it is 3 gallons of water to every one inch of fish. I also heard that it is 5/1. Does anyone know the answer to this?

I'm sorry but i don't think anyone knows the answer to your question. It is the most asked question, yet nobody has an answer. It depends largely on the type of fish and filtration in your tank (aggressive fish has to have more room than nonaggressive fish) but as a general _rule of thumb_ I think that 5 gallon/inch is the most accepted

Thanks for your reply. I have also heard that eels arent counted in the population of inches but you have to account for them in the pollution of the tank. Is this true?
