overflow airline bubbling? (fine tuning sump)

Thanx to the guys/girls that have helped me set this up.
heres another question. (part 2)
The overflow has the airline above the water. (siphon break)
it was noisy, so Ive added another piece of airline tubing down this pipe, (into the sump) and quieted it down considerably.
I am now on a mission to silence this thing as much as possible.

everthing works fine, just the bubbling from the airline causes salt creep on the back of my tank. and it still sounds like a waterfall, a quieter one, but still a waterfall.
Ive upgraded to a mag 7, quieter. and the downpipe seems to be quieter about 2 inches into water in the sump.
any things to try?
whats your set up?
is it even possible?
i muffled the hum of the return pump considerably by zip tieing some filter sponge around it. ( that worked for me)
any tips or tricks you guys got? or am i doing something wrong?
Thanx
-Joe

are you farmiliar with marineland powerheads?Well in all there boxes they include a venturi air tube to plug into the power head for airation, well at the end of that line their is a plastic silincer and in that silincer is a coton swab type of material. If you have one of these layin around plug it onto the end of your airline tubing,if not maybe try stuffing part of a cotton swab in there to silince it.I circled the silincer in the picture.

.This should work

I agree with the last post. But here is what I did, I took a q-tip took the cotton off and put in the end of the tube and it solved the problem. You can adjust the cotton by adding more or re-shapeing it and it should get ride of your noise problem. Sorry about spelling errors, dislexic!

Would drilling a bigger hole in the siphon work just as well?
put the cotton in the end and it didnt really help much...
still got it there just in case something works better.
I snaked another airline down there and still nothing.
Im trying all the "tricks" and nothing!
Still pretty loud in general.
Also.
everytime i do a water change/ power down the main pump.
I start getting the toilet flushing noise again. this is starting to make me wanna bang my head into the wall.
Everthing is fine but when i power down, then start up i have to fiddle with the ball valve on the return to do some fine tuning.
it seems like im lowering the flow everytime a do a water change!
btw. 60 gal tank, 20 gal sump.
working a mag 7 with 4.5' head.
This cant be normal!

Nope no ball valve on drain. Don't want anything to get stuck. Minimize flooding possibilites.
1 90 degree elbow to a 45 degree with union on it. 1 inch piping. Have a small tube coming up from the 90 deg already inside the overflow. I was thinking it may be too small. So iput another drain line in it. ( airline tubing) that didn't help.

yes. it was pre drilled, it is a reef ready overflow built in.
from marineland, 60 cube.
i was thinking that it may be too small...

How is that tank drilled? Bottom or back?
A quick google, it seems that you are not the first to have a noisy drain. Can you put up a pic?

middle drain near top,

back of tank

the return is the bottom one.

Im guessing john is talking about the middle pipe.Where it comes out that 90 elbow has a pvc pipe conected to it running vertical with a cap on the end of it
.

Yea, John is showing you a externial durso pipe. It is the middle one. I would also agree. I would redo your drain. I also would redo it with larger pipe. I would use 1 1/2" pipe but, you might be ok with 1 1/4" pipe. I would leave the bulkhead size alone. I understand that the bulkhead will be the limiting factor for flow but, I am after more surface area for the water to have, so it will make less noise.
