I was wondering what is the point of an overflow box?!?!? And 2nd question is can you use one if you dont have a SUMP? and if so what kind should I get for my 55 gallon tank?

An overflow is used if you wish to have a sump and your tank is not drilled. The overflow takes water to the sump for filtration, and then a return pump in the sump pushes the filtered water back to the tank. If you don't plan to have a sump, there is no need for an overflow.

The point of an overflow is to take water from your undrilled DT and circulate it to your sump. For a 55 gallon you can get any size sump you would like. A 10 gallon would be fine though for your tank. If you wanna go bigger you can. Also if you want I have a brand new Lifereef overflow for sale on the classified's on this site. I have pictures too if you wanna see what the overflow looks like.

don't mean to steal ur post,
I was always wondering about the overflow boxes.
What would happen if you have a power outage,
the return pump is off and the over flow box keeps filling the sump up,
that would be a disaster to find out after a work day that the tank is empty and the carpet floor are filled up with salt water.

The Lifereef overflow is the only company that basically guarentees this will never happen. CPR has a decent name but Lifereef says most of their customers are past CPR customers. I have heard bad things about CPR.

Just saw Lifereef is out of stock on these and will not have for a couple of weeks. So I guess good time to bump. Still have it.

youroverflow box is set at a level that if power goes out it will only take
the amout of water in your tank you set it at .which is also the amount that
your sump can handle.and a check valve prevents backflow on the output
side .imo, no more risky than a canister hose faulting the typical canister
input is way down in the tank .that could practicaly take all water out not to knock canisters ,i have one on a 55g.if your really curious some
people have good diagrams on how they function.

the other point of it is that the first inch or so contains the protiens ect
and an overflow box skimms this off the top taking down to sump to enter
skimmmer and pass macro alge etc
