Ok, I've been doin this now for over 15 years... so I don't want all you "old timers" to laugh. I used an overflow on main main display tank for all of it's life. moved 5 years ago, same set up. (it used to be in the basement) I have a 90 gallon drilled reef tank and a 55 gallon fish tank. I discovered after buying a CPR overflow on that auction site that they had this really cool do dad that srews into the overflow bulkhead that has this little straw in it.... supposedly keeps the noise down. well, i messed around with this thing for the past two months to no avail....still got that "Gulping" noise that I buffered with a huge sponge over the top of the overflow from Home Depot. I always wonderd because my 90 gallon pre drilled has a much bigger "straw".... so tonight i removed the "cone" from the bulkhead of the CPR (all because one of my shrimps decided to jump ship and actually got trapped in the overflow) and drilled it out to 1/4 inch. shoved a full size straw down in the middle of it and fired up the main pump. with a litte trial and error, I can't even hear this thing. you have to adjust the length of the straw to be at a point where it lets the air back into it, without flooding the overflow. it took me 20 minutes of screwing around, but this thing is SILENT. as soon as my girlfriend brings my camera back from Minneapolis, (thank god she left for the weekend) I can show you how easy this is.
