do you have them?
how often do you clean them?
how often should i clean them?
any further recommendations?

they are large filter blocks with a hole in the center of them for the "?drop tube?" as pictured above. the dementions are about 8" X 8" X 6" with a 2" hole in the center to fit over the tube and there are three of them. (the pic is not to scale...) i have no room in my sump for them and they would serve little purpose there.
unless i am missing something from your suggestion.

Imo take them out anything that can get filled with dirt and slow your drain line can cause a flood in the main tank

I agree with the previous post.
I did not mean to necessailry use the same filters in the sump but to move the filtering function to the sump or at least the other end of the drain.
IMHO you need to keep the path to the overflow and drain a clear of obstructions as possible or as stated the overflow can block. Hopefully the sump will run outta water and start sucking air before a flood. But still the operation is not correct.
If a filter in the sump overflowed not only would there not be a flood but the sump system will continue functioning more or less normally. With just the filter material bypassed.

again sorry for the crappy drawing but there is no way that it could clog so much as to cause an overflow. the 2 inch "drop tube" will allow plenty of drain even if the filter media was filled with concrete. but thanks for the resonce.
i took them out just to see if there is a noticable noise differance and there is.
i think they are a secondary filter and noise reducer.
i quess im the only person in this forum with this setup? what do other people do?

perhaps the picture you made is deceptive. Im assuming that the filters are on the outside of the tank in the overflow box. Same box that has the drop tube down to your sump? The picture would be deceptive because you have teeth showing on the box which would put it on the inside of the tank not the outside. Unless I'm looking at it wrong.
I don't have that sort of filter but I do have a cylindrical shaped filter that goes around my drop tube with another round filter that goes inside the cylinder. Ive heard they are nitrate traps so i clean mine when I do my water changes. once every week

picture is deceptive. the overflow box is inside the tank per-say but outside of the display...? is that the correct way to articulate that?
and correction the filter blocks are about 5"X5"X5" with a 2 inch center hole and there are three of them surrounding the drop tube. (its been a while since i last had them out)
it seems as if these are similar to your cylindrical one, i will give more attention to them in the future. they looked a dirty but did not smell bad.
most likly full of good stuff at this point but can become nitrate traps just as you stated.

I cant use my center cylinder that goes in the middle because i get a terribe gargling sound that seems to only be cured by putting a piece of air hose into the drop pipe which releases the air in there and stops the gargling :)
